In the past few days, the peanut butter recall list has grown from 100 to around 240 products due to new cases of salmonella. A total of 35 cases have so far been recorded in 19 U.S. states. Continuing their investigations, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is collaborating with health departments from different states. It calls the recent salmonella infections increase a "fast-moving outbreak."
The Washington State Department of Agriculture could meanwhile identify the outbreak strain in one of the jars of Trader Joe's Valencia Creamy Peanut Butter. The jar was collected from the home of one of the infected patients and contained "Salmonella bredeney," the FDA reported.
After the reports of salmonella contamination, Trader Joe's voluntarily removed the suspected products from the store shelves and started a recall. Sunland Inc. which makes the peanut butter for Trader Joe's also recalled some one hundred of their products as precautionary measure but now extended the list to 240 peanut butter and peanut-related items. Among the retailers, some major brands were also affected, such as Target, Safeway, Whole Foods, and others, as they sell Sunland Inc. products.
