Baugartner, wearing a 260-lb protective suit completely pressurized along with specialized equipment, expects to break four records when he does his supersonic skydive on Tuesday at 8 a.m. ET. [Correction: earliest launch is at 1:15 p.m. ET]
1. First to Reach Supersonic Speed in Freefall: First person to break the speed of sound and achieve Mach 1 in freefall, estimated 690 mph, with further acceleration possible.
2. Freefall from Highest Altitude: Expected jump from 120,000 ft.
3. Longest Freefall Time: Expected freefall of 5 minutes, 35 seconds or more.
4. Highest Manned Balloon Flight: Expected ascent to 120,000 ft.
One of the advisors to this mission is Joe Kittinger, who currently holds the record for highest freefall of 102,800 ft back in 1960.
"If Red Bull Stratos is successful, we can share data that hasn't been available ever before," Baugartner, a record holder for skydiving and base jumping, states. "I would be proud to be able to make such a contribution."
