According to a research, eating high-fat food could damage the brain process which determines whether the body is hungry or full, causing people to overeat and become obese.
Huffington Post reports that in a study published at the Society for the Study of Ingestive Behavior in Denver on July 10, University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine's neuroscientist, Krzysztof Czaja conducted a research on the effects of fats found in highly-processed food such as pastries, pizza, and fast food to the brain.
50 rodents were investigated by feeding them with a balanced diet for the first two weeks. He then fed half of the group with rat food high in saturated and trans fat to see the difference.
After two months, rats fed with high-fat diet became obese. According to Czaja, excessive amounts of fat damage the connection between the brain and the gut due to toxins which affects the composition of gut bacteria in the body. This inflames parts of the brain that receives messages from the gut if the person is already full.
"The communication is broken," he told Huffington Post. "It's like running a car with partially functioning brakes."
Since the brain functioning is impaired, people tend to eat larger amounts of food than needed, which eventually leads to obesity.
Czaja suggests that in eating food with high fat (like fast food burger or fried chicken), make sure to follow it up with healthier intakes such as fruits and vegetables to maintain a balanced diet.
"What I'm trying to say is, don't eat only fried foods," he explained. "The composition of bacteria in our gut is huge, and delivering balanced nutrients will help to maintain a healthy micro biome in the gut."
These contradicts the belief of other people taking the Paleo diet - consume more fat and stay away from carbohydrates and sugar.
