Jake Gyllenhaal is not playing when it comes to transforming his body for a specific role. In the trailer for his new movie "Southpaw," which dropped over the weekend, it's clear to see that the actor whipped himself into serious shape to play a professional boxer.
As revealed by his trainer and former professional boxer, Terry Claybon in an interview with Yahoo, Jake worked like a pro athlete for six months to prepare for the role of a boxer, who battles his demons and destructive behavior to return to the pinnacle of the sport.
The 34 year old star spent six hours a day in the gym to develop a physique that would put many professional athletes to shame.

Jake underwent a grueling training routine, working out six hours a day, while completing 1,000 sit-ups in the morning, and 1,000 sit-ups before bed. Claybon had Gyllenhall spar with professional boxers, and took him to real boxing bouts including a Floyd Mayweather Jr. fight in Las Vegas.

"I knew nothing about boxing when I started really," Gyllenhaal said in a clip oh his workout video. "I knew that in order for me to pull it off in any way, I was just going to have to learn how to do it."
Jake added: "When I set my mind to something I just won't stop until I do it. It's something I pride myself on. It's something I hate about myself. By the end I felt like I could do it."
His new and more ripped character is a far cry from Gyllenhaal's previous role where he played an emaciated-looking reporter in 'Nightcrawler.'
The weight-loss may have taken his medium-sized frame to near skeletal proportions but new boxing film Southpaw signals the star's most dramatic body transformation yet.
To play the fictional New York boxing bruiser Billy Hope, Gyllenhaal gained 15lbs of pure muscle.
Until now, Jake Gyllenhaal has carved a successful career out of more thoughtful roles and his estimated net worth is $65 million according to Celebrity Net Worth.
