'Western' Diet: The Danger In Fast Food

The "Western Diet" - which includes consumption of food high in fat, salt, sugars and red meat, commonly found in fast food and candies, increases risks of infection and obesity, which leads to diabetes and cancer.

CNN reported experts advise choosing fruits and vegetables instead of sticking to the growing trend of consuming processed foods to improve a person's health.

"People around the world, as incomes go up, choose more calories and meat in their diet," said University of Minnesota Ecology professor, David Tilman. "We have a whole new group of people who are malnourished because they eat foods that are no good for them, that have no nutritional benefit."

U.S. National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases' Ian Myles describes the "Western" diet as "overconsumption of over-refined sugars, highly refined and saturated fats, animal protein and a reduced intake of plant-based fibers."

According to Myles, eating large amount of foods that contain fructose and palmatic acid can damage the immune system. Palmatic acid, which is commonly found in candies, deceives the immune system as E.Coli bacteria, which distracts its fight against real infections. "It throws off the way your body responds...and by the time you recognize it, it will have gotten worse," he explained.

The increase in the number of those that prefer eating foods high in calories and fat also increases the growing number of obesity cases. In 2004, World Health organization reported that there are over 600 million obese people worldwide.

"Obesity predisposes you to disease," said Imperial College London's Department of Surgery and Cancer head Jeremy Nicholson, who listed "inflammatory conditions" such as arthritis, diabetes, stroke, heart disease and cancer are among the dangerous risks of obesity.

"In obese individuals you get different microbial compositions to produce something that can impact cancer," he added, implying that all these relate to the person's "Western" diet.
