Apple Watch Sales Tank By 90% since April Launch

Is demand for Apple's new Watch bottoming out? That's what recent data shows. A report published by Market Watch shows that sales of the tech giant's first foray into wearable technology have plummeted by 90% since its launch in April.

The data, which was gathered by California based research and analytics firm Slice Intelligence, shows that at present, the company is selling around 20,000 a day in the US with some days slipping below the 10,000 mark. This is a far cry from the 200,000 units the watch was moving just three months ago.

Slice also notes that two thirds of the sales have come from the lower priced "Sport" model which retails at $349. On the other hand, Apple's higher priced luxury version, the "Edition" variant, which is made of gold and retails for $10,000, has moved about 2,000 units in the United States. The rest of the sales are covered by the third "standard" Apple Watch which retails at $549.

Despite the troubling sales figures, some outlets are pointing to the fact that Apple's numbers eclipse those of any other wearable device. Apple Insider had this to say about the Slice report:

"In a rather desperate bid to establish some aspect of failure for Apple Watch, journalists appear to have completely overlooked the majority of the data Slice actually presented. Even if the Slice data is only moderately reliable, it clearly shows that Apple's first attempt to sell a "smart band" has trounced everything else on the market, and continues to far outsell everything else even after supposedly "collapsing."

Apple Insider also says that Slice data should be taken with a grain of salt, as daily sales figures are notoriously hard to predict:

 daily "

So is the Apple watch doomed? Or is this just a bit of sensational reporting? We'll have to wait and see.
