When the DC superhero flick 'Man of Steel' first came out, audiences were stunned by the level of damage Superman (Henry Cavill) caused while trying to stop General Zod (Michael Shannon). Some viewers even considered the destruction "unnecessary," since Superman was easily able to defeat General Zod by breaking his neck.
'Man of Steel' director Zack Snyder has finally spoken up about the controversial ending. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the director talked about his reaction to the criticism.
"I was surprised because that's the thesis of Superman for me, that you can't just have superheroes knock around and have there be no consequences," Snyder said.
The director, who worked with Cavill again on 'Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice,' was not apologetic for the carnage. He claims that the destruction is part of making films about people with super powers.

"There are other superhero movies where they joke about how basically no one's getting hurt," Snyder said. "That's not us. What is that message? That it's okay that there's this massive destruction with zero consequence for anyone?"
The carnage does lead off to the events that will happen in 'Batman v Superman.' Ben Affleck, who will play Bruce Wayne in the film, took Zack Snyder's side.
"One of the things I liked was Zack's idea of showing accountability and the consequences of violence and seeing that there are real people in those buildings," Affleck said. "And in fact, one of those buildings was Bruce Wayne's building so he knew people who died in that Black Zero event."
In 'Batman v Superman,' Bruce Wayne sees the powerful Kryptonian as a threat on humanity and does everything in his power to protect the world.
'Man of Steel' also starred Amy Adams, who will reprise her role as Lois Lane in Snyder's new movie.
