Wells Fargo bank website is suspected of being hacked, amid threats by an Islamic cyber-terrorist group to attack US financial institutions such as Bank of America, JP Morgan Chase, New York Stock Exchange and other U.S. targets. Some customers experienced intermittent problems on Tuesday to access the website.
"I don't believe these were just hackers who were skilled enough ... to cause a disruption of the websites ... of Bank of America and JP Morgan Chase," said Senator Joe Lieberman (I-Conn) in an interview on last week with C-SPAN's "Newsmakers" program.
"I think this was done by Iran and the Quds Force, which has its own developing cyber attack capacity," Lieberman continued. "And I believe it was in response to the increasingly strong economic sanctions that the United States and our European allies have put on Iranian financial institutions."
According to NBC News, national security officials have said that recent attacks on JP Morgan Chase and Bank of America are by the Iranian government. One official said that these attacks were under the cover of hackers angered by a recent anti-Muslim film.
Claiming to represent "cyber terrorists of Izz ad-din Al qassam," someone said that they would attack such properties until the film "Innocence of Muslims" was completely erased. The film has stirred violence and unrest in the Middle East, causing attacks against US diplomatic missions in several countries and the death of an American ambassador and three others.
In a new posting on pastebin.com, the person also warned of attacks later this week against U.S. Bancorp and PNC Financial Services Group Inc.
A spokeswoman for Wells Fargo said that it was working to quickly resolve the issues, declining to comment on the source of the problem.
