YouTube viewers have been hooked on a new gorilla. In a video from 1992 a gorilla mother can be seen carrying around a toddler like a doll, the New York Daily News reports.
The video, which was recorded at Howletts Wild Animal Park in Britain, shows a 300-pound gorilla picking up a little girl and proceeds to carry her around her playground.
The girl did not end up with the gorilla by accident however, but had been placed with the gorilla with the good intentions of her father, ABC News reports.
The father, British conservation activist Damian Aspinall, just recently released the video showing the gorilla holding his daughter, Tansy, the Daily News said. His main goal being to portray gorillas as "gentle giants."
American zookeeper Jack Hannah explained in an interview to ABC News, "You've got to be really careful. These are wild animals." He also remarked that gorillas are "unpredictable."
However this case was different as Aspinall and his family had been accepted as part of the gorillas' family structure, something which Hannah notes is "very rare."
Some viewers have been outraged by the video. In much part because they don't know the family history Aspinall has with the gorillas.
Although Aspinall's intentions were good, wanting to show a different side to the ape than what is generally known from movies such as King Kong, he might have caused other misconceptions of the animal.
