Mean Girls Returns as Mobile Video Game!
Will 'fetch' finally be a thing in 2015? Cady Heron, Regina George, and the rest of the plastics are making a return in mobile form later this year in a new game from developer Pocket Gems.
As reported by the Hollywood Reporter, The upcoming game will be a free to play, choose-your-own-adventure style experience that will combine Pocket Gems' animated interactive storytelling with original plots based on the classic 2004 teen comedy.
In an interview, Pocket Gems' Jameel Khalfan says despite the movie being more than 10 years old it's still a "favourite for people at the company" and a "really good fit for the platform".
The Mean Girls game is part of an effort by Pocket Gems to use its storytelling technology platform, known as Episodes, to create more games based on existing IP. "We see this as a natural progression for us," says Khalfan, explaining that the company has previously allowed people to create their own stories on the Episode platform and has hired writers to construct original choose-your-own-adventure tales.
The Site reports that the writer of Legally Blonde and 10 Things I Hate About You Kirsten Smith will be penning the game's plot along with Marcy Kelly.
This is not the first game to be set in the Mean Girls universe. A puzzle game for the Nintendo DS entitled Mean Girls DS came out in 2009 while a tower defense style game called Mean Girls: The Game was recently released on iOS earlier this year.
Written by Saturday Night Live star and comedienne Tina Fey, the original film stars Lindsay Lohan as Cady Heron, a newly transferred student who becomes involved with the school's social elite, The Plastics, led by Regina George (Rachel McAdams). In the 11 years since the film's release it has reached an almost universal level of adoration in pop culture lore.
