A woman was hit in the head by a broken baseball bat and was bleeding from her head at Fenway Park during a game between the Boston Red Sox againt the Oakland Athletics. Tonya Carpenter, the woman who was hit by the bat, was then rushed out of the stadium during the game's second inning. The game was halted during the second inning as the Emergency medics came to help her. The medics helped her into a stretcher and was wheeled off the field.
Carpenter was hit by Oakland Athletics player Brett Lawrie during the second inning. The bat broke on a groundout to second base.
Tonya Carpenter was then rushed to Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center for treatment. Carpenter was hit directly in the head and was bleeding. She was sitting on the second row near the third base dug-out and the home plate when the broken bat hit her. She is now recovering from the incident. The 44 year old was given surgery but still needs a long recovery. Both family and friends of Tonya are relieved that she survived the injury and is now recovering from it.
A friend of Tonya Carpenter, Mickey Markou, said that "We're grateful that the word is getting out there and we're grateful that Tonya at least went through the surgery and has shown signs that she was lucid and knew what happened,". Markou also added that "She just started a new job and we didn't want to wait to put it out there. We didn't want her to go home and find out then that she needed extra money. I don't know if she'll be able to drive and I'm not sure the family knows the extent of the injuries yet. So far it's been encouraging news and we're just hoping that we keep hearing that every day."
