Facebook has opened their new laboratory in Paris for artificial intelligence development. The largest social media platform aims to reinforce its position in Europe.
Facebook Artificial Intelligence Research (FAIR) already has existing premises in New York, and Menlo Park, California. Management then decided to build new laboratory in Paris because of the strict scrutiny of the social media site in the region.
The team chose Paris for a special reason. The company based in Menlo Park, California stated that, "We chose Paris for this expansion because France is home to some of the best researchers in the world."
Yan Lecun, a professor in New York University who grew up and was educated in Paris will be the head of FAIR. The official name of Facebook's Artificial Intelligence is Deep Learning.
Google also owns an independent Artificial Intelligence system called Dee Mind.
As the race for the advancement of AI research goes on, FAIR decided to widen and expand their territory in Paris to convince prominent figures to invest in the project.
Facebook is serious in the business of developing Deep Learning which aims to enhance their messaging, voice or speech recognition, image and video services.
Millions of its subscribers are also using Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp. If Facebook would be successful in this plan, even more users will benefit from the system they will develop.
Facebook has recently spent more than $1 billion to support their research. That amount spent is equivalent to 30 percent of their annual revenue, so it's no surprise that much is expected in terms of the outcome of this project.
"It's our hope that this research will ultimately help us make services like News Feed, photos, and search even better and enable an entirely new set of ways to connect and share," the head of FAIR stated.
