Johnny Depp Teaches Son About Life in 'Black Mass' Trailer [VIDEO]

Johnny Depp has transformed himself into several different characters through the years. He has been a strange man with scissors for hands, a swashbuckling pirate and an eccentric genius with a candy factory, to name a few transformations.

The actor has taken on another larger-than-life character, as evidenced in the trailer for 'Black Mass.' The teaser shows Depp as an aging gangster teaching his son a few facts of life. The official synopsis is as follows:

"In 1970s South Boston, FBI Agent John Connolly (Joel Edgerton) persuades Irish mobster James "Whitey" Bulger (Depp) to collaborate with the FBI and eliminate a common enemy: the Italian mob. The drama tells the true story of this unholy alliance, which spiraled out of control, allowing Whitey to evade law enforcement, consolidate power, and become one of the most ruthless and powerful gangsters in Boston history."

The trailer shows Bulger committing several crimes, proving that he is one of the most notorious criminals in American history. However, his neighbors are unaware of the truth. When an old woman asks when he was released from Alcatraz, he replies that it was about ten years ago. The woman comments, "Well, it's wonderful to have you back in the neighborhood, son."

The film is based on the novel 'Black Mass: The True Story of an Unholy Alliance Between the FBI and the Irish Mob' by Gerard O'Neill and Dick Lehr. It boasts of an all-star cast including Benedict Cumberbatch, Dakota Johnson, Kevin Bacon, Peter Sarsgaard, Sienna Miller and Corey Stoll.

Depp has appeared in several films including 'Edward Scissorhands,' 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory' and 'Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.' He is set to reprise his role as the Mad Hatter in the upcoming 'Alice Through the Looking Glass.' The actor is also expected to appear as Captain Jack Sparrow once again in 2017's 'Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell no Tales.'

'Black Mass' will be released on September 18, 2015.
