Currently, there are three official shows set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the first of which was the Joss Whedon-produced one starring Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) as the head of SHIELD; now, as "Agents of SHIELD" season 3 is confirmed, it seems like there aren't any other MCU projects on ABC in the near future.
While there are a few more confirmed Netflix MCU shows in the works (from this year's new show "Daredevil" to "A.K.A. Jessica Jones" and a Luke Cage series, all of which are leading up to "Defenders"), ABC is taking a step back by only confirming the "Agents of SHIELD" season 3 and "Captain America" follow-up show "Agent Carter" season 2.
Coming Soon reports that the two shows have been renewed for the next season, but the proposed spin-off show didn't have the same luck.
AV Club reports that, before the "Agents of SHIELD" season 3 was confirmed, Disney execs were thinking of creating a new spinoff show related to the first one, starring Adrianne Palicki as SHIELD agent Bobbi Morse (codename Mockingbird) and her ex-husband Lance Hunter (Nick Blood).
Both characters are new additions to the Phil Coulson-led team, and Mockingbird in particular has turned into a fan favorite of the show - but the "Agents of SHIELD" season 3 announcement also came with new rumors that the new show had been scraped altogether.
Deadline reports that the Mockingbird new series had been developing quietly by Jeffrey Bell and Paul Zbyszewski, although neither Marvel nor ABC ever confirmed it; the show was going to follow the events of the first MCU series, but when the "Agents of SHIELD" season 3 was officially picked up it seems like they decided against taking off the two fan favorite characters out of the show, which is struggling with ratings as it is.
The "Agents of SHIELD" season 3 confirmation happened only a few days before the season finale, where SHIELD is set to face the Inhumans in battle.
