Starbucks Police Officer case was heard Wednesday, after a Raleigh police demanded payment for damages he sustained in a 2012 incident involving Starbucks. Matthew Kohr, a lieutenant is suing the coffee giant for a hefty amount of $50,000 to $750,000 after he spilled a free hot coffee on his lap.
The Starbucks Police Officer case was heard three years after with more complaints against the coffee giant.
According to Kohr, the extent of damages on the 2012 incident was demoralizing after he suffered third-degree burns and blisters. He also testified in court that because of the incident, he was on a long duration of sick leave and had trauma.
Starbucks Police Officer complainant also stated that his Chron's disease was also triggered that he went to surgery for removal a part of his intestines, according to WRAL report.
I didn't know it was that hot," Kohr said during his cross examination."What's a year and a half, two years of your life worth? I thought it was worth $10 million."
"As time went on, as we learned more information, as we learned how the process develops ... we adjusted the number and came up with $750,000 and that's what we're asking," Kohr continued.
In the initial lawsuit filed against Starbucks, Kohr was only suing the coffee giant company for $10 million. But according to Starbucks Police Officer complainant, he and his wife as well as their kids suffered trauma brought about by the incident. His wife, Melanie he said suffered emotional distress.
However, during the court session on Wednesday when the Starbucks Police Officer case was once again heard, Kohr said that he didn't go to emergency care at once.
He stated he went home after dropping his patrol car in the police garage and it took him some time after he reached home to have the burn photographed. It was only then the Starbucks Police Officer complainant went to the emergency care unit for treatment.
Attorney Tricia Derr of Starbucks cross examined Kohr and asked why it took him more than two hours to go to an emergency healthcare facility. Kohr, the Starbucks Police Officer complainant replied by saying that during that time, he didn't think of pursuing a legal action, the US News reported.
However, the Starbucks Police Officer complainant remained firm in his statement that it was the faulty cup of Starbucks that popped up and suddenly collapsed on his lap that caused the coffee to spill on his lap. Kohr is suing the company for amount between $50,000 and $750,000.
