One of the most iconic companies in Sweden (and in the entire world, come to that) has now upped their restaurants' menu with the addition of veggie options for their famous Ikea meatballs, as the company tries to clean the product's name after horsemeat was found in their original meatballs.
In early 2013, an Ikea meatballs scandal was made public: Forbes reported at the time that the problem began when experts found horsemeat on some of the meatballs set to be sold in countries in the European Union, ultimately expanding to the Asian market through Thailand and Hong Kong, and even to Latin America in the Dominican Republic.
Following the Ikea meatballs scandal, the products were withdrawn from their respective markets, and the issue ultimately led to a larger-scale problem with horsemeat contamination in a number of foods, above all in Europe and the United Kingdom in particular.
Now, two years after the Ikea meatballs scandal, the Swedish company is trying to get on the public's good graces once again, this time introducing new options for those who are interested in the growing market of vegetarian and vegan options.
According to USA Today, the Ikea meatballs will have two new options: Veggie Balls and vegan Veggie Balls, as the company moves a step closer towards sustainability and food conscience for Millennial patrons and those embracing a healthier lifestyle.
Fortune reports that, besides profiting from the growing market of vegetarians and vegans, their new meatball products will serve them in another big market that religiously doesn't consume beef: India. The iconic Swedish company is looking to invest, within the next decade, about $2 billion in the Asian country.
According to The Huffington Post, the vegan meatballs have been available since April 9 on their US in-store restaurants, under the name Grönsaksbullar, and a plate of 10 of them is set to cost $4.49.
Now, vegans have their own option when it comes to enjoying the delicious Ikea meatballs!
