Following months' worth of rumors about a possible "X-Files" reboot or revival, now Fox has confirmed that David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson will be returning to the small screen for a new round of episodes of the beloved sci-fi show, reprising their roles as Fox Mulder and Dana Scully in the process.
As January ended, Food World News reported that the "Californication" actor had already said he'd be on board were they to make a new revival of the show, but now it has been confirmed that both David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson will be coming back for the new order of episodes.
According to People Magazine, the confirmation of David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson came last Tuesday, in a press release that talks about the return of their characters for a special event series of six episodes, which has been also called a reboot by the news outlet.
Deadline reports that David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson won't be the only ones returning to the alien-filled world of "The X-Files," as the series creator and its executive producer, Chris Carter, is also on board for the new revival of the show, confirmed a full thirteen years after the end of the original show.
"I think of it as a 13-year commercial break," said Carter to Entertainment Weekly about the return of the show, alongside David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson. "The good news is the world has only gotten that much stranger, a perfect time to tell these six stories."
The show ran for nine seasons, from 1993 to 2002, and it became a massive critical and audience hit, often referenced in pop culture as one of the most iconic shows of the 90s. In its long run, it won a total of five Golden Globes and six Emmy Awards, including accolades for both of its stars.
David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson will begin filming the new event series in the summer of 2015.
