RoadFish.com men’s lifestyle and finance magazine today offered some last-minute tax filing tips to procrastinators and encouraged weary taxpayers to take advantage of the long list of freebies and discounted food and drink offered at businesses around the country.
Vendors, restaurants and businesses all over the country are providing “tax day freebies,” giveaways, or special discounts as a silver lining for weary taxpayers on April 17th. According to Annette Graf of the Examiner, participating restaurants and businesses this year include Arby’s, Cinnabon, Chili’s Bar and Grille, Boston Market, Seattle’s Best Coffee, Maggie Moo’s, Panda Express, Sonic, White Castle, Office Depot and HydroMassage. Discounts range from buy one, get one free offers, to free fries, mini Cinnamon bun bites, a free ice cream cone, and a free massage. RoadFish.com’s Senior staff writer is quoted as saying, “I look at Tax Day freebies as a win-win: companies bolster their business, getting some great marketing and extra income from drawing the crowds, plus they boost their reputation as being sensitive to taxpayers during a stressful week. And us, the taxpayers, well we get free food, drinks, and services to ease the blow of our tax filing labors, and you won’t see anybody complaining about that!”
RoadFish.com also warned against missing the deadline for filing. According to the Associated Press, last year over 30% of American taxpayers filed their taxes the week before Tax Day or even later than that, through extensions. Reportedly, the IRS statistics for 2012 reveal that this year will have a similar outcome. The article recommends requesting an extension through form 4868 for those who believe that they may miss the deadline of April 17th to file their taxes. An extension will automatically tack on an extra six months for your taxes to be filed and will keep you from incurring a late-filing penalty. The article reports that in 2011, the IRS received 10.5 million extension forms, nearly half submitted electronically. Extensions are available for both state and federal tax returns.
RoadFish.com expressed a hope that if folks suspect that they may not be able to complete their tax returns by midnight on Tuesday, they will file for an extension just in case. RoadFish.com’s Senior staff writer is quoted as saying, “It’s just so not worth the headache to miss the deadline. It’s actually considered income tax evasion. All kinds of penalties can creep up, like being fined, having to pay interest on money owed, and even in the most serious cases having to serve a prison sentence. It’s pretty serious stuff that can negatively impact your finances, which can really take a toll on your credit score, your mental health, and so on. So, just be smart about it.”
Taxes are typically due on April 15th of each year, however this year the date falls on a Sunday. Monday, April 16th is a holiday—Emancipation Day—so tax day has been pushed back to Tuesday, April 17th 2012, giving taxpayers two extra days to file than in years past.
