Pee-Wee Herman Netflix Project Sees Paul Reubens As Beloved Bowtied Character On Long-Awaited Pee-Wee Return

After having played the children's character for years, Reubens and the character became the subject of controversy in 1991, after the actor was arrested for public masturbation in an adult theater, forcing the comedian to step out of the spotlight and retire the character for the time being - now, over 20 years later, Pee-Wee Herman's Netflix return aims to puts everything behind him.

According to website PeeWee.com, the Pee-Wee Herman Netflix project will be overseen by Judd Apatow, the man behind projects like HBO's Lena Dunham show "Girls" and the successful comedies "Pineapple Express," "The 40 Year-Old Virgin" and "Bridesmaids," not to mention a few flops like Adam Sandler's "Funny People."

Other people involved in the Pee-Wee Herman Netflix project will be John Lee, who has directed different episodes of "Inside Amy Schumer" and "Broad City," making his directing debut in a feature film - the first Pee-Wee movie since 1988!

As CNN reports, the Pee-Wee Herman Netflix return will be entitled "Pee-Wee's Big Holiday" but, for the time being, no release dates have been announced.

As a character, Pee-Wee was born from Reubens' comedy improv routine, as he created the character based on someone everyone in the audience understood would never make it in stand-up.

Later, the 1985 feature film debut of the character, the Tim Burton-directed "Pee-Wee's Big Adventure," ended up becoming a cult classic, even giving the character his own show, "Pee-Wee's Playhouse."

As QZ reports, the new Pee-Wee Herman Netflix venture is the latest revival the on-demand streaming company is involved with, after creating a fourth season of cult show "Arrested Development" and developing a mini-series sequel to "Wet Hot American Summer."
