Krispy Kreme KKK Wednesday Promo Backfires: It’s Krispy Kreme Klub, Not Ku Klux Klan!

When the breakfast giant released the Krispy Kreme KKK Wednesday promo recently, it seems nobody at their headquarters pointed out that, as much as they tried to make Krispy Kreme Klub happen, the acronym has been associated with the white supremacy group Ku Klux Klan for a very long time.

As the company launched their Krispy Kreme KKK Wednesday promo in the United Kingdom, users all over the country wondered how they failed to see the obvious reference to the hate group founded in the United States South in the 19th century, after the fall of the Confederacy in the American Civil War.

Fox News reports that the Krispy Kreme KKK Wednesdays were part of a series of promotional events that was going to run in the Hull branch of the British chain from noon until 5 pm. The move was meant to invite children into the premises, but backfired as users all over the country pointed out that the whole thing was an acronym for one of the most famous hate groups in the world, one that has traditionally committed unspeakable acts against minorities, particularly the black community.

According to The Daily Mail, the company was forced to pull out their Krispy Kreme KKK Wednesdays after users around the country pointed out that the acronym was a clear reference to the Ku Klux Klan, amazed that the whole thing had gone unnoticed by the executives and marketing people of the doughnut chain.

Gawker made a pun about the Krispy Kreme KKK Wednesday promo on their article, calling it "unkool," after the chain publicly apologized for the inappropriate name

"Krispy Kreme apologizes unreservedly for the inappropriate name of a customer promotion at one of our stores," said a spokesperson for Krispy Kreme to The Guardian about the Krispy Kreme KKK Wednesdays. "This promotion was never intended to cause offence. All material has been withdrawn and an internal investigation is currently underway."
