The iconic phrase "live from New York, it's Saturday Night Live!" has just turned forty years on the air, with hundreds of the most famous people in show business having uttered in one point or another - and the SNL 40 years anniversary was a whole night of hilarious homages to the famous show!
Many of the top comedians of our time have become famous thanks to Saturday Night Live: from Bill Murray and Dan Aykroyd to "The Tonight Show" host Jimmy Fallon, Oscar-nominated Eddie Murphy and even Kristen Wiig - so it's no surprise that the SNL 40 years show was one of the most hilarious specials in the history of television, with some of the biggest names in show business!
According to BBC, some of the people in the SNL 40 years anniversary were Steve Martin, Taylor Swift, Jimmy Fallon, Tom Hanks, sir Paul McCartney, Kanye West, Bradley Cooper, Miley Cyrus, Chris Rock and even Robert De Niro - it seems like everybody in Hollywood wanted to be a piece of Saturday Night Live history, even considering all of these people have already been in the show hosting or performing at one time or another.
According to The Daily Beast, there was one downside to the SNL 40 years special: Eddie Murphy. Following a 30-year fight with Lorne Michaels, the creator of "Saturday Night Live," news outlets have pondered whether part of his contract to return included some form of adulation, as the show wasted a good six minutes on an unnecessary "Dr. Dolittle" homage that didn't seem to satisfy anyone but Murphy himself.
Australian ABC states that, even with the Murphy mishap, the SNL 40 years show was one to go down in history, with people in the red carpet of the New York Rockefeller Center event even honored past cast members like John Belushi and Chris Farley.
