After having had its release in the 2014 edition of the famed Sundance Film Festival, the new movie starring Ryan Reynolds and Anna Kendrick will see its premiere this weekend, but what are "The Voices" film's reviews so far, and is it worth seeing Reynolds play a murderer?
As "The Voices" film hits theaters this weekend, IMDb's description for it is as follows: "a mentally ill factory worker stumbles innocently into the role of a killer, guided along the way by his evil talking cat and benevolent talking dog."
Is it worth your time and money to go catch the Marjane Satrapi-directed movie?
According to Slate, "The Voices" film actually has quite a bit to offer - particularly for the fans of Reynolds' previous work, as he's seen to shine throughout the entire movie.
In its review, the magazine ventures to say that there will be two types of audiences that'll see the movie in theaters, those who love Reynolds and those who are into Satrapi's previous work, particularly the Academy Award-nominated adaptation of her comic book, "Persepolis," about her story growing up in the restrictive Iranian Islamic State after having an European education. In this categorization, it seems Reynolds' fans will be the ones to enjoy it most.
On the other hand, The New York Times' review of "The Voices" film is considerably less favorable, as it says the horror comedy isn't particularly suspenseful nor funny, calling it "tongue-in-cheek without any real wit" - in all, the review says the movie fails to reach what it's promised in either of the genres.
IndieWire was more benevolent in its review, stating that the movie "navigates the line between the gruesome and the goofy" fairly well, calling it a warm and funny outlook at a schizophrenic character who talks to his pets - and they answer right back to them.
Website Rotten Tomatoes gives "The Voices" film a 75 percent rating of Fresh - so it doesn't look like a bad idea to drop by a theater and watch it this weekend!
