Ever since its first official screening at the Toronto International Film Festival premiere, Eddie Redmayne's Stephen Hawking portrayal in "The Theory of Everything" has been getting some heavy critics' love - now, in a tough year for the Best Actor category, he's one step closer to the Oscar, after getting the first award of the season.
The movie awards season has officially kicked off, with the Golden Globes last Sunday and the Academy Awards nominations being announced this next Thursday, but as actors Michael Keaton, Benedict Cumberbatch and David Oyelowo in the run, how is Eddie Redmayne's Stephen Hawking looking?
For many, Eddie Redmayne's Stephen Hawking portrayal in "The Theory of Everything" was what made the entire movie, even above the performance of his fellow Globe nominee Felicity Jones.
As Cambridge News reports, the young actor, 33, thanked his new bride Hannah Bagshawe for her support in his career, telling the audience that they'd just gotten married three weeks ago and that they'd had to cut their honeymoon short to go to Los Angeles for the award season - altogether, it couldn't have been that bad to see sunny California and get such a big award for their honeymoon.
According to The Independent, the win for Eddie Redmayne's Stephen Hawking performance comes in a year filled with portrayals of real-life people: just last Sunday, he was competing for a Golden Globe with fellow British actors Benedict Cumberbatch and David Oyelowo, who were nominated for playing English computing pioneer Alan Turing and American civil rights icon Martin Luther King Jr., respectively.
According to The Telegraph, Redmayne's recent Golden Globe win makes the "Les Miserables" actor a favorite for the Academy Award for Best Actor, as it often happens that whoever wins the dramatic acting award also ends up bagging the Oscar later in the year; however, he'll be facing the aforementioned actors as well as "Birdman" star Michael Keaton, heavily buzzed due to his breakthrough role later in life, a combination that award shows also love.
Next Thursday, the names of the official Oscar nominees will be announced - and it's fair to say that Eddie Redmayne's Stephen Hawking has a very strong chance to win!
