In Health News, the new USDA guidelines for school cafeteria meals are now being discussed.
The new guidelines are scheduled to be implemented into schools for the 2012-2013 school year. The guidelines are aimed at changing the food that children consume in school to help create better eating habits.
Ultimately the goal is to provide children with nutritious meals and teach them the basics of healthful eating.
The new guidelines will set a maximum amount of calories for each meal that is served and will cut out foods that contain high levels of sodium and trans fat. Fruit and vegetable servings will be doubled and more whole grain choices will also be offered.
The two foods that will remain untouched are pizza and French fries, due to the insistence of food companies that produce those foods.
