Get Back to the Basics! Jamie Oliver to Unveil Victorian Food Ministry

The crusading chef Jamie Oliver will unveil a Victorian Ministry of Food in his fight against obesity.

Oliver will unveil the Ministry of Food Victoria on Tuesday in a partnership with the Baillieu government, which will be included in a $40 million budget for healthy living initiatives.

The Ministry of Food will be the world’s first program in which the Baillieu government will target 14 communities including the most overweight, unhealthy and disadvantaged.

This project is to provide healthy eating courses and practical lifestyles to more than 10,000 people a year. The Ministry of Food centre will teach families the basics of preparing healthy meals with 10-week courses and basics of shopping more healthily with 90-minute sessions.

A mobile kitchen will travel between the communities as a classroom to teach cooking to children, schools, and workplaces.

“I am really supportive of the Victorian Government’s plan for an anti-obesity campaign,” Oliver told the Herald Sun. He also said that the Ministry of Food was meant to inspire people to get back to basics in the kitchen.

The first centre will open in Geelong this year.

Courses will cost about $10, and people can register at the centre.
