A recent widow after Christine Baranski's husband Matthew Cowles passed away last spring, the actress who plays Diane Lockhart in "The Good Wife" has now spoken out about her recent loss for the very first time.
Famous for playing tough women in television and movies - with a career that includes credits like "Cybill" and "Mamma Mia!" -, it's not surprising to realize that the death of Christine Baranski's husband has hit the talented actress the hardest, as she's been going through a difficult year due to this.
At the end of May this year, The Daily Mail broke the news that Matthew Cowles, Christine Baranski's husband, had passed away suddenly at the age of 69, from congestive heart failure, leaving behind wife Baranski, their daughters Isabel and Lily and their grandson.
While not as popular in the mainstream media as his wife, Christine Baranski's husband was also a man of the arts, most famously playing villain Billy Clyde Tuggle on the soap opera "All My Children," (for which he got a Daytime Emmy nomination). However, other roles include a part in Martin Scorsese's "Shutter Island" and playing the character William Brandt in "Oz."
The actor's first movie was the 1969 film "Me, Natalie," where he played Harvey Belman opposite "The Bride of Frankenstein" herself Elsa Lanchester; the film also saw the silver screen debut of an actor who would end up becoming a legend of the craft: Al Pacino.
Following the death of Christine Baranski's husband earlier this year, the actress hadn't made any statements on the matter - until now, during a Variety interview about her upcoming movie "Into the Woods," the Rob Marshall film adaptation of the Stephen Sondheim classic, co-starring the likes of Meryl Streep, Johnny Depp, Anna Kendrick, Emily Blunt and Chris Pine.
"It's been a tough year," she said, according to Boston Herald. "I lost extraordinary people in my life, but I have a beautiful grandson, my wonderful 'Good Wife' colleagues and the beautiful people associated with the film here tonight."
This was a brave statement from a brave woman, who will see the release of her new movie on Christmas day.
