Baby Born In Flight - The shocking event took place on Tuesday morning on board a Southwest flight, which departed from San Francisco and was meant to travel up to Phoenix but ended up in Los Angeles.
It happened on the 623 flight, which took off at 6:24 am, according to LA Times. Apparently, most of the passengers didn't realize what was happening until the baby was born already.
"I just had a baby," were the words uttered by the father of the child, and the mother was assisted by a doctor and a nurse who happened to be aboard.
The flight crew got blankets to cover the baby and asked the passengers if anyone had scissors to cut the umbilical cord. A female passenger donated her pair of beauty scissors, which she took off from her cosmetics bag.
Most passengers had been quiet throughout the flight, but when it was announced that the baby was born, they all cheered for the unbelievable event.
"It was very shocking," said Ken Marshall, one of the passengers who witnessed the event and told about it. He was also sitting two rows in front of the woman who went on labor during the flight.
The plane diverted from its actual destination and landed on Los Angeles, where the mother and the baby were received by a team of medics, ABC News noted.
"LAFD praises an ER RN that assisted the mother in giving birth prior to our arrival," said LAFD spokesman, Erik Scott and CNN reported.
After two hours and a half, the other 111 passengers were able to continue on with their journey to Phoenix in a new aircraft.
It's also been reported that today's baby wasn't the first one born during a flight. In 2009, a passenger gave birth to a baby boy in a flight going from Chicago to Salt Lake City.
The babies born in flights tend to be given a birth certificate in the state where the plane lands.
