New York State of Mind' Writer Receives Award: Library of Congress Honors Billy Joel with Gershwin Prize for Popular Song

Billy Joel, 65, singer as well as song writer received award from Library Congress. They honor Joel with Gershwin Prize for Popular song. He is the writer of the song "New York State of Mind" and Piano Man" as well as many other hits of today.

Joel performed to celebrate the award that he received. The concert happened together with Gavin DeGraw, Tony Bennett, John Mellencamp, Boyz II Men, LeAnn Rimes, Natalie Maines, and some of the entertainers. Joel's music is enough to gather Democratic and Republican congressional leaders to join and celebrate with them.  

During the show Joel pre-recorder a clip, "I'm flabbergasted to be included in this group. I haven't quite got my head around it yet." Joel is considered as the 6th top selling artist and he is not a stranger to praises from his fellow artists and even new to prizes and awards. This week, Billy Joel was among the five top artists who were honored by American society of Composers as well as Publishers, and Authors in New York.

Justice Sonya Sotomayor of Supreme Court praised Joel. She is a fellow New Yorker because he created a lasting legacy of music for the whole nation. Justice Sotomayor said, "For more than five decades, Billy Joel has inspired new generations of performers, musicians and singer-songwriters and tonight we recognize Long Island's favorite son, even if he is a Mets fan."

Paul McCartney, the Famous Barbara Streisand, and James Taylor were also there who also gave tributes for Billy Joel. The said concert will be broadcasted on Jan. 20, 2015, at PBS. So, for those who haven't there and wanted to see such wonderful concert earlier next year is that chance that you shouldn't miss watching.

During the luncheon, Joel shared to all the people in there that he is still thinking of his beloved mother. "I keep seeing this through her eyes now. She would have just gotten such a kick out of this."
