It's time to take a good look at your Starbucks mug collection. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) just dropped a steaming hot recall on over 440,000 Starbucks mugs sold during the winter holidays. Here's the tea: these mugs, manufactured by Nestle, can overheat and break when zapped in the microwave or when filled with super-hot liquids. The CPSC reports 12 incidents already, including 9 cases of nasty burns and blisters!
If you have any of the recalled mugs, stop using them immediately. You can return them to the store where you bought them (Target, Walmart, etc.) or contact Nestle USA directly for a full refund. No receipt is needed!
Don't toss all your Starbucks mugs just yet! The recall only applies to specific metallic mugs included in four different holiday gift sets sold between November 2023 and January 2024. These sets included:
Starbucks Holiday Gift Set with 2 Mugs (11oz or 16oz)
Starbucks Classic Hot Cocoa and Mug
Starbucks Peppermint and Classic Hot Cocoas and Mug
Starbucks Holiday Blend Coffee and Mug
The short answer is that it depends on the mug. To be safe, remember to always check the label or the bottom of the mug before microwaving. Bonus tip: Always avoid using mugs with cracks or visible damage. The crack can fail, covering you in hot liquid, and/or the crack can harbor microbes that can make you sick.
