Lawrence Kasdan is obviously a 'Star Wars' veteran who has worked on several screenplays for the franchise. However, the writer/director recently admitted to The L.A. Times that he still gets excited when it comes to working on something that involves Han Solo. The 'Raiders of the Lost Ark' writer happily discussed the upcoming Han Solo standalone film, which he reveals will take place before 'A New Hope.'
"You know, he's younger in this [spinoff] movie and that's fun because you have to imagine him 10 years earlier in his early 20s." Kasdan said before asking the important questions that will be answered in the film. "What was he like before he hardened up? Before he had some setbacks? Before he put on this cynical coat? What got him there?"
It certainly sounds like the Han Solo film will not only take place before the events in 'Star Wars' but also before the Millennium Falcon captain became a smuggler working for Jabba the Hutt. Lawrence Kasdan admits that he had decided to take on the project because Han Solo has always been his favorite character to write dialogue for, something that began with the first film.
"It started with the first movie, and it's really one moment when they break into the cellblock and he has this conversation with the Stormtroopers over the comlink," he said. "They question him and he runs out of answers and he shoots the comlink and says, 'It was a boring conversation anyway.'"
Lawrence Kasdan confesses that this is his favorite Han Solo scene.
"That's my favorite moment probably in all of 'Star Wars.' And that's Han," he said.
The Han Solo film will be directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller, although the movie has yet to find its leading man. Several young actors are currently hoping to nab the role of the stuck up, half-witted, scruffy-looking Nerfherder although there have been no definite casting news.
