What Science Says About Your Smile

Smiles make the world a happy and peaceful place to live in. Said to be the only thing to be totally free, a smile, of course when shared to people around, makes it more special and meaningful. But do you know that a smile can also say something about you, your health and even your future?

WebMD featured smiles as a secret that makes other people succeed in business, fill up their social calendar, and get more romance into their lives. "Your meek, straightforward, and most of all, sincere smile can attract more than such a pretty face or an admiring aura."

It also included that a smiling face tells people that you’re an outgoing and intelligent person worth getting to know, nice to be with, and can reward you with a favorable and positive impression.

"When someone has a big smile, it shows they’re willing to open up and expose a part of themselves," Pamela McClain, DDS, a past president of the American Academy of Periodontology said in the report. When taken as a habit and once practiced over the long term, smiling can benefit your health, perception at work, social life, and romantic status - allowing you to have the "best of both worlds".

With those findings, it is indeed worthwhile to discover what your smile is saying about you as well as how to interpret the smiles shared with you. Many people look at the mouth of someone to judge a person’s mood, but people smile for all sorts of reasons: varying from anger, fear, embarrassment, confusion, to deceit.

Though it largely depends on your judgment and interpretation, science says that the muscles around the eyes can’t be forced to look happy. According to previous studies, "when people smile for real, their cheeks rise and the skin around their eyes bunches up. In fact, in certain countries where suppressing emotion is a cultural norm, people look more at each other’s eyes to gauge genuine emotions."

A smile, be it real or fake, conveys confidence and professionalism. Hence, people, possessing a positive outlook in life, are generally more open and flexible - being able to cope with challenges better than those who are withdrawn and unsmiling.

Now, let your smiles say something about you and your future.
