‘Guardians of the Galaxy 2' Spoilers & Rumors: How Star Lord's Father Could Be Captain Marvel, Why is Director Shooting Down Theory? [CAST, PLOT, RELEASE DATE]

WARNING: POTENTTIAL "GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY 2" SPOILERS AHEAD.

It's no secret that Peter Quill's father will be revealed in "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Now latest rumors suggest that his father has already been identified.

According to Heroic Hollywood, the character is Captain Marvel, which could be the role that Oscar winner Matthew McConaughey turned down for "Guardians 2."

How? Well, "Guardians of the Galaxy" ended with the Nova Corps' reveal that Quill's father came from an ancient mysterious race, making Quill half-human and half-alien. His alien side explains how he survived touching one of the Infinity Stones (The Power Gem) as he defeated Ronan the Accuser (Lee Pace).

According to Gunn, Quill's father in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is totally different than that of the comics, but the latest rumors suggesting Quill's father refers to the original Captain Marvel in the comics, who is Kree military officer Mar-Vell, according to Screen Rant.

The biggest hint is reportedly when "Guardians 1" showed Quill's mom dying of cancer, which is the same illness that took Mar-Vell's life in the comics.

Also, IGN has previously described Captain Marvel as follows:

"Mar-Vell was a soldier in the intergalactic Kree Empire who was sent to Earth as a spy. Instead, Mar-Vell fell in love with his new home and became Captain Marvel, champion of earth..."

"Mar-Vell seemed destined to live out his life as a respected hero and family man." However, "Mar-Vell contracted terminal cancer in a battle with the villain Nitro. He ultimately perished surrounded by friends, family, and comrades. Surprisingly in a universe where resurrections happen every other hour, Mar-Vell has yet to return to life. It remains to be seen whether that will stay true, but in life or death, Captain Marvel remains one of the most influential heroes in the Marvel Universe."

Everything remains uncertain however, especially after director James Gunn already slammed the "Guardians of the Galaxy 2" rumors a few hours after reports were published.

On his official Facebook page, Gunn said:

"The rumors surrounding Quill's parentage at the present moment are completely false, and aren't even close to the truth."

"We're creating a film that doesn't rely on plot twists to be an enjoyable experience. They're only a very small part of what we're cooking up for you," he added at the end.

Also, Gunn had been clear from the beginning that the reveal of Star-Lord's father isn't going to be some big twist, but it will play a large role in the story of "Guardians of the Galaxy 2."

Gunn said "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" begins principal photography in 2016, 14 weeks from now to be exact. Scripts have also been sent to the main casts, and in a few weeks, other cast members are expected to be revealed.

James Gunn is screenplay and director to "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2," starring Chris Pratt, Dave Bautista, Zoe Saldana, Michael Rooker, Sean Gunn, Benicio del Toro, Pom Klementieff, and Bradley Cooper and Vin Diesel's voices.

"Guardians of the Galaxy 2" is set for release May 5, 2017.
