If a flawless skin is defined beautiful, hence skin issues such as a dark circle under one's eye can be considered a problem. Experts explain the truth about this skin flaw and give suggestions on how to deal with it.
Many believe that periorbital dark circles are traced to sleeping late or lack of sleep, tiredness or working too much. According to Mayo Clinic, this skin issue can also be associated as a sign of aging and can be caused by allergies, fatigue, contact and atopic dermatitis, sun exposure, thinning skin and frequent rubbing of eyes.
Experts also believe that it can be hereditary. One may have it when most of her family members are found to have one. A person's race is also a determining factor. Asians or darker colored race usually experience abnormality in pigmentation, thus creating different colors on skin. Pratik B Sheth et al. of the PDU Government Medical College and Hospital in India explained in his study, "Aesthetic facial concerns have been the main reason for dermatological consults in the last few years. Among which there is one that is called "periorbital hyperpigmentation" (POH) or "dark circles under the eyes" (DC).
Periorbital hyperpigmentation is defined as bilateral, homogeneous hyperchromic macules and patches primarily involving the lower eyelids but also sometimes extending towards the upper eyelids, eyebrows, malar regions, temporal regions and lateral nasal root. The age of onset is usually after puberty or in early adulthood (16-25 years). It is more pronounced in certain ethnic groups and is also frequently seen in multiple members of the same family."
Vanessa Hernandez, skincare specialist and celebrity aesthetician for L'Oréal Paris, gave one helpful tip to conceal dark circles. "The secret is knowing your skin," she stated. Hemandez emphasized the significance of proper skin care. "It's never too soon to start using an eye cream, morning and night."
Some regimens that were found useful in getting rid of dark circles are vegetables such as cucumber, potatoes and tomatoes. Cucumbers are made up of mild astringent substance good for making dark spots lighter. Raw potatoes are proven effective for the eyes' puffiness while bleaching properties are found in tomatoes. Lemons are also established agents for skin whitening.
