ADHD: The Struggle Behind The Disorder

ADD or ADHD [Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder] is a behavioral disorder that is often taken for granted or misdiagnosed. Though it often affects children, it can be exhibited by adults too. Over 6 million children in America alone are diagnosed with ADHD. Approximately 11 percent of school aged children in the US are diagnosed with the disorder and 13 percent are boys.

As per Everyday Health, Michael Manos, PhD, head of the Center for Pediatric Behavioral Health at the Pediatric Institute of the Cleveland Clinic stated that the primary symptom of ADHD is lack of attention.

"The definition [of ADHD] has at its core three primary symptom areas: inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity,"

Manos then gave out a broader view in regards to the disorder stating that there are actually two types of ADHD which are fascination and directed attention.

"Fascination is sort of the natural state of the brain, the natural state is to be interested in something. On the other hand, directed attention is what you use when you have to do something that you don't enjoy and will suffer consequences by not doing it, like getting a bad grade for not studying."

The disorder can be very challenging as it prohibits the individual to perform his/her daily tasks. It's not that they don't want to, it's just that they can't focus on what they're about to do even if they put their minds to it.

Healthy Children website then added that children with ADHD would often have a hard time getting along with their peers. They would also have a hard time coping with school work, daily chores, and daily settings. The website then added that the impulsive factor of the disorder can often lead the child to danger, and would leave them with learning disabilities. They are often labelled as "bad kids" due to their restless behaviour in which they don't intend.
