Researchers Say Internet-Based Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Anxiety and Depression Shows Effective and Good Results

Anxiety and depression are two of the most common disorders that people get these days because of the kind of lifestyle they live. Career driven stress and depression are commonly observed in workers who have high expectations for their career choices. According to Medical Daily, there is a new review done to a new Internet-based cognitive behavioral therapy, when combined with some in-person care, can benefit people with depression, anxiety, and emotional distress caused by illness.

Further studies are indeed needed to check which one the most effective combination is between counseling sessions, Internet-based treatments, and, possibly, medication for patients. Finally, these combined treatments seem to be effective in helping people who don't have severe mental health disorders however still need some help during tough situations. This was explained by  Dr. David Gratzer, psychiatrist, and Faiza Khalid-Khan, social worker, at Scarborough Hospital in Toronto. He added that some providers need to be more flexible and allow some patients who are more comfortable in outpatient centers and doing the computer tasks rather than staying at home and doing it there. They conducted a review of 1,104 studies published between 2000 and 2012 and focused on three conditions in particular: anxiety, depression, and emotional distress associated with physical illness.

There is a form of psychotherapy that is based on Beck's Negative Cognitive Triad; this is called CBT or Cognitive behavioral therapy. Dr. Aaron Beck said the people who are depressed have developed negative outlooks about themselves and everything around them. These beliefs usually will be compounded and be on top of each one which will make them only seeing the darker side of life. They make certain assumptions that make them more vulnerable to being more depressed. The CBT method effectively takes out these beliefs that prevent the person from believing they can do their best. In the test, a CBT therapist removed the automatic negative thoughts and helps the patient to change their beliefs. Since this method has definite goals, it is easier to do it even without a therapist.

The researchers said that there are many studies over time but it definitely improved. Flexibility in the treatment like online therapy for one can help patients who are shy or very depressed to overcome their reluctance to face people and speaking. Some reviews showed that patients who used the Internet-based CBT showed better results than patients who receive the normal traditional in-person CBT.
