'Skippy' Recalls Peanut Butter That Could Contain Metal Shavings

Nearly one ton of Skippy Reduced Fat Creamy peanut butter was recalled due to possible contamination with metal shavings.

Time reported last week that the company announced in a press release that it would be recalling a total of 153 cases, or 1,871 pounds, of Skippy Reduced Fat Creamy Peanut Butter, on account of possible contamination of some jars with small pieces of metal shavings.

Hormel Food Sales LCC shared that it discovered the shavings during a routine cleaning of its plant in Little Rock, Ark. However, a pallet of peanut butter meant for destruction managed to make its way instead to distribution centers.

"Foodborne objects that are greater than 7mm in length may cause injury such as severe choking with airway obstruction, gastrointestinal peroration or secondary infection," the firm's press release read. "The recalled product is limited to 16.3 ounce jars with a "Best If Used By" date of DEC1416LR1 with a package UPC code of 37600-10500. The code date is located on top of the lid. A photo of the product and "Best If Used By" date appears below."

The distribution centers which received the possibly tainted peanut butter serve Walmart, Publix and Target in seven states:

Moreover, the company is issuing the recall to ensure that consumers are made aware of the potential hazard. Up to this writing, no reports have been received of any consumer injuries or complaints.

It was emphasized, however, that no other sizes, varieties or other packaging configurations of SKIPPY brand peanut butter or peanut spreads are included in the latest recall.
