Gourmet Pet Deli Opens in Berlin

For the pet owner who's not satisfied with their pets' kibble or food from a can, there's still time to try the Pets Deli.

According to The Local, Pets Deli is Germany's newest eatery, where owners can bring their pets and order to stay or to go. The Deli, located in Berlin's Gruenewald district, offers five-star meals designed specifically for cats and dogs.

Owners choose from several categories such as meat, veggies, and carbs. Meals include beef, turkey or even kangaroo meat with broccoli or berries. Owners can also mix and match their orders based on their pet's preferences.

Owner David Spanier told The Local that the idea was inspired after learning his dog was not able to digest regular pet food from supermarkets.

"Junk food is bad for animals," Spanier told The Local. "It's as if I ate fast food every day. I may like it, but it's very bad for your health."

Store manager, Katharina Warkalla, who is also an animal nutrition expert, said the meat "is of such quality that it could be safely consumed by humans." Pet Deli opened during the Christmas holiday. The food is sold in plastic trays or can be consumed on site, in a metal bowl, while owners have their own treat, like a cup of coffee.

But the new eatery has provoked controversy, with critics questioning whether "Berlin really need a gourmet restaurant for dogs?"

"A store this decadent gives the impression that we do more for animals than for children," Wolfgang Büscher, of the Ark charity, which works with disadvantaged youngsters, told The Local.

A meal at Pets Deli goes for between $4 to $8.
