Science can Make You Less Scared of the Dentist

Do you find your knees shaking and palms get sweaty when you enter a dental clinic? Study shows that forty percent of humans have a fear on going to the dentist while five percent are experiencing serious phobia. If you have red hair, you will probably feel the pain more, not only emotionally but physically. Fortunately for you, solutions were discovered so you can look forward to a painless visit.

Magic wands

A magic wand or Quicksleeper is a tool for intraosseous anesthesia that looks like a pen. It allows anaesthesia to be positioned right into the cortical plate near the teeth. Compared with other anaesthesias, Quicksleeper is faster and easier to use. The pen allows the dentist to have a great control over the tool's movement guaranteeing a steady flow of anaesthesia without feeling the pain. This is a recommended device especially for those who are scared of needles.

Laughing Gas

An alternative choice could be a laughing gas (nitrous oxide, also known as relative analgesia). Nitrous oxide is clearly a gas one can breathe in. One advantage of using this gas is it kills pain and creates a delightful feeling.  The effect of the gas can be felt quickly since it reaches the brain within 20 seconds. Pain-killing effect and ease can be experienced after  2 to 3 minutes.

The pain killing effects of anaesthesia is dependent on several variables. One is linked with the genes. Study confirms that people with red head are more responsive to pain, therefore need more  anaesthesia. Hot tooth, an infection under or in the tooth could also affect the outcome, making the anaethesia less effective. The condition makes the tissue more acidic which lessens the amount of anaesteshia that reaches the tissue

Prevent gagging by applying salt on tongue or humming a tune

Opening the mouth for a long time while being checked by a dentist makes a person gag. Gagging is also an outward expression of physiological factors such as fear or panic. A person with a phobia of dentist is more expected to gag occasionally during a dental check-up.  One way to overcome it is by applying salt on tongue before the procedure. The taste of the salt distracts the mind from thinking about the procedure or tools in your mouth.  Humming, on the other hand, causes a person to breathe in through the mouth which stops gagging.
