After a dozen of glorious covers of Drake's Hotline Bling, including that of the soulful rendition of Erykah Badu, it's no wonder that this song is a hit and has been owning the music charts for weeks now.
The music video for the same song has also been a subject of countless memes and vine videos to date. In spite of its popularity, the rapper is accused of ripping off D.R.A.M.'s "Cha Cha," who recently expressed his thoughts saying that Drake "jacked" his song from him. To which Drake responded in a statement:
"You know, like in Jamaica, you'll have a riddim and it's like, everyone has to do a song on that," he explained. "Imagine that in rap, or imagine that in R&B. Imagine if we got one beat and every single person - me, this guy, this guy, all these guys - had to do a song on that one beat."
"So sometimes I'll pick a beat that's a bit, like, sunnier, I guess is the word you used, than usual, and I just try my hand at it. And that's kind of what 'Hotline Bling' was," Drake explained.
But the song's issue doesn't end there. On Friday, a tweet from the 90's boy band, Backstreet Boys called out Drake, pointing out that they did the song first.
"Not to cause any beef @Drake... but before there was Hotline Bling.... there was The Call," as the group referred to their 2001's pop jam The Call of their album Black & Blue.
The two songs however, have similarities only in their fixation with using their phones, While Drake's song is focused on reminiscing good times with a girl he loves and how he was called whenever she needs him, Backstreet Boy's the call is obviously centered on lying and cheating his girlfriend.
