Two Words That Will Give Your Marriage a Brighter Spark

Apparently, the three words "I love you" are not enough for a successful and healthy marriage. According to a research at University of Georgia, saying "thank you" and an expression of appreciation are effective ways to avoid divorce and show commitment in a relationship.

The Independent says that gratitude, which is measured by how appreciated and loved individuals feel by their spouse, is the most consistent manifestation of marital quality. Gratitude is a key ingredient in improving couples' marriages as it is an expression of loyalty and how one feels about his or her spouse.

Allen Barton, the lead researcher of the study, speaks about how powerful "thank you" is in the journal Personal Relationships. It can cancel out conflicts and negative encounters in relationships and promote positive marital outcomes. As said by the study co-author Ted Futris, an associate professor in the College of Family and Consumer Sciences, saying "thank you" and being more appreciative could break a pattern of poor communication when couples are undergoing difficulties and extreme stress.

The study involved 468 married people and interviewed them about their financial well-being, whether they "demanded" or "withdrew" in expressions of gratitude in their relationship. The researchers found out that expressions of thankfulness can really fight against and buffer the negativities on marital stability. The finding can be applied not only to marriage but also to all kinds of relationships-whether be it friendship or work-related connection.

This is the first study to document and look at the protective effect of positive and motivating feelings can have for marriages. The newly proved knowledge is indeed helpful to individuals and couples, especially those who are not the most adept and skilled communicators, in conflict.

Dr. Barton, counsels individuals in relationships to "tackle negative conflict issues and improve the quality of their relationship".
