Garden Fresh Food Recall: 19,000 Pounds of Meat Has Potential Listeria Contamination

Pre-cooked chicken and ham from Garden Fresh Foods of Milwaukee has been recalled after testing by the Food and Drug Administration uncovered a potential Listeria contamination.

According to a United States Department of Agriculture press release, the establishment is recalling about 19,054 pounds of ready-to-eat products have been recalled.

The problem was discovered through microbiological testing at the facility by FDA. The ready-to-eat meats had already been distributed across the country for use in salad brands such as Market Pantry, Archer Farms, D'Amico and Sons, Finest Traditions, Garden Fresh, and Weis.

There have been no reports of illness due to consumption of the products, however salads using the meat in question should be discarded. The company and the agency advised anyone concerned about an illness to contact a health care provider.

Listeria can lead to miscarriage in pregnant women and serious illness in people with weakened immune systems.

The USDA recommended suggestions for people at-risk for Listeriosis, which include washing hands with warm soapy water before and after handling raw meat for at least 20 seconds. Wash cutting boards, dishes and utensils with hot soapy water.

Keep raw meat, fish and poultry away from other food that will be cooked and use separate cutting boards for raw meat, poultry and egg products and cooked foods. Garden Fresh Foods, Inc. is a fresh cut produce company located in the Pacific Northwest, since 1987. For a full list of products, products codes, and expirations dates, see the USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service website.
