Jada Pinkett Smith Reveals Past Struggle: 'I Had Many Addictions, of Several Kinds'

Another year older and another year wiser.

After celebrating her 42nd birthday on Sept. 18, actress Jada Pinkett Smith wrote a special post on her Facebook to reflect on her life.

"What I learned about myself is this, when I was younger I was not a good problem solver, meaning I had a very difficult time with dealing with my problems in life," she wrote on her Facebook page.

The typically candid star revealed that throughout the years she's had her fair share of struggles and has even suffered from "many addictions, of several kinds."

"I had a very difficult time with dealing with my problems in life," the "HawthoRN" actress wrote. "I had many addictions, of several kinds, to deal with my life issues, but today, at 42, I have my wisdom, my heart and my conscience as the only tools to overcome life's inevitable obstacles. I have become a good problem solver with those tools, and I am damn proud."

Although Smith did not go into further details on what her addictions may have been, Will Smith's better half added, "What I hope it that we all continue to gain healthy understanding that life is really about solving problems, and also about is learning to become masters at solving them."

The actress's day job is being mother to stepson Trey, 20, son Jaden, 15, and daughter Willow, 12. Smith has frequently used her Facebook page as a way to address her fans.

In April, the actress clarified comments she made suggesting she and her husband have an open marriage.

"Will and I BOTH can do WHATEVER we want, because we TRUST each other to do so," she explained on Facebook. "This does NOT mean we have an open relationship . . . this means we have a GROWN one."

In the summer of 2011, the actress dealt with rumors claiming she had an affair with her "HawthoRN" costar Marc Anthony.

"Will is my best friend," she told HuffPost Live. "He's been by my side for some of the most difficult parts of my life. You always have that for your foundation."
