Ann Curry: Matt Lauer Opens Up 'Today Show' Firing, 'I Was Disappointed By the Laziness of the Media'

"Today" host Matt Lauer is finally speaking out about Ann Curry's departure from the morning show.

Lauer said life at the show was "disappointing" for him after Curry was fired. He said he was told to keep quiet after the firing even though many media outlets blamed him for Curry's departure.

Lauer said although he was disappointed by the way Curry exited the show, he knew there was nothing he could do for her.

"The way the media treated what happened with Ann Curry was a disappointing learning experience," Lauer told Esquire Magazine. "I was disappointed by the laziness of the media, the willingness to read a rumor, repeat that rumor, and treat it as a fact."

The host said he remembered being "incredibly frustrated" over the past two years. He said his salary was never correctly reported and he did not believe he could have gotten away with complaining about his troubles.

"Does anyone want to see a person who's making the money that the newspapers say I'm making complaining, 'Woe is me, my life is terrible, and people are being unfair,'" Lauer told Esquire. "No one would've had any patience for that. I wouldn't have any patience for that."

Curry was replaced by Savannah Guthrie. Media reports said Lauer described his relationship with Guthrie as having more "Chemistry." The bond came from covering stories like the attacks of September 11, 2001.

"There's a difference between good chemistry and a bond," Lauer said at the time, according to NBC News. "Chemistry is something you have with somebody you meet or you don't. Broadcasting through 9/11 together, like Katie Couric and I did, creates a bond."

In the magazine, Lauer offers some advice for up and coming broadcaster.

"You're going to have twenty years as host of the Today show, and eighteen of those years are going to be so unbelievably fantastic that you're going to think you're living in a fantasy world," said Lauer. "And one or two of those years is going to be incredibly frustrating and challenging."
