Though many popular beverages come and go, orange juice is one that has endured through the ages. Whether someone is having a glass with eggs on toast in the morning, or sipping a cool, refreshing pitcher in a sunny park, orange juice is a drink that is loved by practically all.
An increased consumption of fruit and vegetables has been associated with beneficial effects on the risk of disease. Citrus juices, especially orange juice, is a rich source of vitamin C, but its health benefits remain poorly understood.
The brain performs countless of collective duties, but it's thought that orange juice can aid several of the most immediate, improving speech, memory and reaction times.
Researchers at the University of Reading, England, are of the opinion that these remarkable results are down to the natural substances known as flavonoids - and orange juice is full to bursting with them.
Flavonoids are one of the largest nutrient families known to scientists, this nutrient group is most famous for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory health benefits, as well as its contribution of vibrant color to the food we eat.
The researchers are of the opinion that flavonoids can bolster brain function as they trigger what are known as the 'signalling pathways' of the hippocampus - the part of the brain used for learning and storing information. What's more, flavonoids can also help with blood circulation and safeguard neurons, helping them to transmit vital signals.
Drinking a 240ml glass of orange juice boost alertness, concentration and reaction times, the study has found
Researcher Daniel Lamport said: "Cognition and alertness were significantly improved up to six hours after a 240ml serving of orange juice."
"Eating or drinking flavonoid-rich fruit could be a great morning tonic, helping us to maintain alertness and concentration in the classroom or at work," he added.
The study was funded by PepsiCo, which makes Tropicana fruit juice.
