Power couple Jay Z and Beyonce joined the crowd demanding "Justice for Trayvon Martin" at a Manhattan rally on Saturday.
The couple joined Trayvon's mother, Sybrina Fulton, who proclaimed her son's innocence and urged a civil rights prosecution against George Zimmerman.
"He was a child," Fulton said outside 1 Police Plaza. "Don't take my word for it. He had a drink and candy. "
The National Action Network, led by the Rev. Al Sharpton, prominent civil right activist, organized the rally.
"Jay-Z told me, 'I'm a father. Beyonce is a mother.' We all feel the pain and apprehension, the laws must protect everybody, or it doesn't protect anybody," Rev Sharpton told the New York crowd, according to the Huffington Post. "We do not come from hate we come from love of children."
The crowd shouted "Justice Justice" as they rallied in dozens of U.S. cities Saturday, urging law makers to change the stand your ground laws. The also demanded authorities press federal civil rights against former neighborhood watch leader Zimmerman.
Zimmerman was not found not-guilty after shooting and killing of 17-year-old Martin during an altercation on February 26, 2012. The case aired on national television and has remained in the public light after the verdict was delivered.
"I'm not here to do interviews, thank you," the chart-topping hip-hop star said after he and wife spent some time with Fulton in lower Manhattan.
In his Yankee Stadium concert with Justin Timberlake the night before, Jay Z dedicated the song "Young Forever" to Martin. Beyonce called for a moment of silence for Martin during her Nashville concert the night the verdict was handed down followed by the chorus of "I Will Always Love You."
As the rally began to fade down. Loudspeaker played Jay Z "Empire State of Mind." Voices in the crowd shouted "We Love You, Sybrina!" Demonstrators waved signs reading "I am Trayvon" and Enough is enough."
