The American actor, screenwriter and producer Matt Damon, becomes The Martian in the hyper-realistic sci-fi space drama of director Ridley Scott, which follows a team of astronauts on a mission to Mars.
Matt Damon and his team of astronauts struggled to survive, when a wind storm hits the Red Planet and threatens their lives. The NASA team composed of- actress Jessica Chastain, actor and musician - Michael Peña, Norwegian actor and screenwriter - Aksel Hennie, American actress - Kate Mara, and Sebastian Stan flees the planet. Leaving behind their colleague, botanist and astronaut Matt Damon who plays Mark Watney, whom they assumed to be dead.
However, Mark Watney is very much alive. During The Martian's 141 minutes, Mark Watney is shown as the lone human on Mars left to fend for himself.
Matt Damon having to deliver a monologue as there was no one to play off in the scene said, "I just rehearsed at my house, basically,"
In addition Damon also said, "By the time I arrived on the set, I had the entire script committed to memory just from having done it so many hundreds of times.On the first day of filming, I did the first monologue, it's like a couple of pages, and director Ridley Scott said 'cut!' Ridley Scott just looked at me and goes, 'We should do two movies at once.' "
Jessica Chastain, who started her Hollywood career with guest-roles on several television shows, stated, "Matt Damon's so charming, he's so amusing," "It's like yes, I believe the entire world would unite to rescue Matt Damon."
The Martian was filmed partially in Jordan's red desert, and the flick was adapted by Drew Goddard (the scriptwriter of World War Z and Lost) from the self-published e-book by Andy Weir.
Director Ridley Scott said that Matt Damon's astronaut on Mars is the MacGyver for a new generation, "a jack of all trades and a master of all," where Matt Damon as Mark Watney had to depend on his ingenuity to produce water and grow potatoes in order to surivie.
On Thursday night, Jessica Chastain walked the red carpet at the European premiere of Ridley Scott's The Martian, alongside with co-star Matt Damon.
20th Century Fox slated to release The Martian film in theaters in U.K. on September 30, 2015 and in theaters in the U.S. on October 2, 2015.
