Twinkies are coming back with longer life span when they return to store selves next week.
Hostess Brand LLC's spongy yellow cake will have a shelf life of 45 days when they return on July 15. The shelf life is three weeks longer than the original 26 days shelf life, according to the Daily Meal.
The product will be frozen before they are shipped out. Stores would be responsible for defrosting and restocking the selves as needed, according to the New York Post.
According to a Hostess spokeswoman Hanna Arnold the idea to extend the shelf of a Twinkie originated from the old company owners. Arnold did not say what changes were made to extend the shelf life. According to the Post, she said it was considered proprietary information.
"Any Suggestion that Hostess is changing the integrity of the iconic snack cakes consumers have loved is completely untrue," Arnold wrote in an emailed statement to the Huffington Post. "The new ownership is absolutely committed to baking top quality snack cakes and, in fact, is making major investments to ensure that Hostess products are as good, it not even better, than before."
According to the Post, sources close to the company worried the new freezing process could threaten the products integrity and future popularity.
The company, founded in 1930, went bankrupt in 2012, laying off over 18,500 workers. According to CBSnews, competition was increasing and Americans were becoming more conscious about eating healthy.Twinkies and other Hostess snacks companies were brought in 2013
