Like any other rat in the Big Apple, it is hungry for life. Unlike the rest of its rodent brethren, however, it was recorded carrying a large, single slice of pizza down the dirty cement steps of a New York subway station.
The hashtag #PizzaRat went viral almost immediately after YouTube user Matt Little posted a video of a rat carrying a whole slice of pizza down Subway steps on September 21.
The disturbing yet endearing 14-second video is going viral on Facebook and Twitter, being touted by many as "the most New York thing ever." The YouTube clip was supposedly shot in New York City on stairs leading down to the subway.
While most people might run away fast upon seeing a rat in the Subway station, Matt opted to take his camera out and shoot video instead . The rodent skillfully drags an entire pizza slice down a flight of stairs at the First Avenue L train station in Manhattan.
“Live your best life,” the videographer whispers, sending his wish to the rodent who perhaps has already vowed to do so.
But, eventually, it seems the animal gets a little freaked out and confused, because it ditched the pizza and ran down the rest of the steps alone. Still, it can be seen looking back at its lost meal, possibly contemplating whether or not to go back and try again.
The headlines of Pizza Rat's media pick-up are already all over the place. USA Today goes literal, almost scientific: “Watch a rat carry a slice of pizza into the subway.” Mashable hopes for a better world: “Rat carrying pizza slice will teach you what it means to have a dream.” And New York Magazine waxes J. Jonah Jameson with a hot takedown: “Pizza Rat Is No Hero.”
After the video became viral, many Twitter users sent out funny messages using #PizzaRat.
