National Suicide Prevention Week: People With Mental Problems Are Prone To Suicide

As the United States celebrates National Suicide Prevention Week, a new study in Taiwan shows that people who suffer from mental health problems are prone to commit suicide.

The Taiwan Suicide Prevention Center (TSPC) recently revealed that around 1.245 million people living in Taiwan have mental problems and 13.2 percent of the mentioned population attempted to commit suicide.

The news has alarmed the authorities in the region. It is even more disappointing to know that 20.4 percent considered suicide over the past year while 10.5 percent thought about doing the act over the past month. More and more people are resorting to suicide to end their miseries.

Since suicide is a global issue, many people in other countries who thought about killing their own selves were recorded. In the US, 41,149 suicides were recorded in 2013. It is also considered as the 10th main cause of death in the nation. The World Health Organization also revealed that 800,000 people in the world commit suicide each year.

In every 40 seconds, one person dies by the act of suicide while in every four seconds, one person attempts to do so.

In the study which was conducted with the aid of the so-called 'feelings thermometer', it was found that 6.2 percent of the subjects have mental health problems.

As included in the study, many people are aware of the importance of suicide prevention. Many are also willing to help those individuals who would seek their help. Around 7.6 percent of the respondents of the survey said that at least one of their friends wanted to commit suicide over the past year.

Among the respondents, 80.8 percent confirmed that they would try to discourage individuals who are hinting to commit the said act while 11.8 percent said they would accompany those who are suicidal to convince them to seek medical help or consultation.

The said survey was released in line with the celebration of the World Suicide Prevention Day on September 10.
