Dr. Oz's Inadequate Medical Advice

Mehmet Cengiz Oz became a well known doctor and television personality after appearing on The Oprah Winfrey Show. In 2009, he acquired his own television show which focuses on giving viewers health and medical advice.

Previous guests of his show include: Michelle Obama, Fitness Expert, Jillian Michaels and Celebrity Rehab's Dr. Drew. Yesterday, he posted a video on his Twitter page about how food companies use marketing schemes in order to make customers believe they are purchasing products that appear healthier than what they really are. He began the video discussing whole grain imposters, the three examples he gave were Bulgur, Bran and Brown Rice. He had a woman guess which one she thought was not a true grain. He explains to viewers that Bran is the correct answer. Many companies market healthier food options using Bran in their labeling however Bran is just the outer part of the grain. He then asked the same girl which one of these is the healthiest bread? The options were Whole Grain, Seven Grain and Multigrain. The girl guessed Seven Grain which was the incorrect answer. The correct answer was Whole Grain. Dr. Oz explained that marketers will include words such as "multi" in order to make the consumer believe they are purchasing an item that contains more nutrients than it actually has.

He offered viewers tips on how to read packaging labels to assure them they are buying foods that contain whole grains. One of them was to make sure there is a 100% Whole Grain label stamped on the packaging, another way is to look at the ingredients; the first one should read 100% Whole Grain Flour.

Dr. Oz accumulated a large following due to his television show. Some people believe he offers inadequate medical advice and supports too many dietary supplements. During the holiday season, the doctor boasted about the latest supplement, Garcinia cambogia and just like every other product on the health market it promises people to blast away their unwanted fat for good. It has experienced an increase in profit due to his approval. He claims it will help people lose weight without any excessive dieting or exercise. People do not need to participate in excessive exercise in order to lose weight, nor do they need to go on an "extreme" diet. All they need to do is cut their caloric intake, exercise regularly and cook their meals at home rather than frequently dining out.
